What Does Freedom Really Mean?
Brenda AdamsonRedefining Freedom from the Inside Out
Independence Day is this week, but before we talk fireworks and flags, we want to ask you something deeper.
When you hear the word “freedom,” what comes up?
For some, it’s a political idea.
For others, it’s financial or physical.
But for us, and for so many of the people we’re walking this journey with, freedom starts in the mind.
And for it to mean anything real, it has to be personal.
Tamaz said today, as we reflected on what freedom means to us:
“Freedom in the mind is important first, no matter what is going on in the outside world. Unless you choose to focus on your mindset first, you’ll never feel free. True independence begins with yourself.”
We’ve both lived through moments that looked nothing like “freedom” on the outside, but looking back, those were the very moments we began to reclaim it.
Grief, loss, and the journey back to self
For Tamaz, one of those moments came the day before our wedding when his mother passed away unexpectedly. It was devastating. We had to decide, do we postpone the wedding or move forward?
It was Naomi’s love for family that gave us the answer. She would have wanted us to continue.
Tamaz turned that grief into a mission, not by pretending it didn’t hurt, but by choosing to lead with purpose anyway. He began mentoring young men in our community. He stayed close to his family. When his niece Ember was born, he was lit up with a new determination to leave a legacy she could be proud of.
For me (Brenda), I lost both my parents to cancer, years apart. My father died when I was 20, leaving me with a lasting lesson in determination. Nine years later, my mom passed as well. These losses reshaped everything for me.
I went on to become a youth leader in my religious community, overseeing 5 states and traveling constantly to encourage young women. It gave me a sense of purpose again. That work, helping others discover their inner strength, saved me.
Freedom isn’t something given. It’s something built.
We’re the first in both of our families to start a business like this.
We don’t have children of our own, due to a medical condition I’m unable to conceive, so we’ve poured our legacy into Starlead Wear.
And we’ve made it our mission to help others realize this:
Freedom is not about what’s happening outside of you.
It’s about reclaiming what’s always been yours on the inside.
You don’t need perfect circumstances to be free.
You don’t need a million dollars or permission from anyone else.
You need truth. You need inner alignment.
You need to stop waiting for the world to give you peace and start choosing it for yourself, in the smallest of moments.
What might freedom look like for you?
Is it setting a boundary with someone who always takes from you?
Is it leaving a job that drains you, even if you’re scared?
Is it saying no without guilt?
Is it finally telling the truth about what you want?
Reflect on this:
Where in your life have you confused survival with freedom?
What’s a belief you’re ready to let go of so you can move forward?
What’s one step you could take today to reclaim your independence, not just as an idea, but as a lived reality?
Or try this:
Write your personal Freedom Declaration. One sentence. Honest and yours.
Share it with someone. Speak it aloud. Post it in The Starlead Tribe.
Ask yourself: If I were already free, how would I show up differently today?
Because no matter what’s happening around you, your soul still knows the way back to freedom.
And that’s where real leadership begins.
Freedom is a state of mind.
☝🏽 RISE GREATLY.
